Fanny Crosby

Fanny Crosby was born on this day in 1820.  She was an incredibly prolific and influential hymnodist in the american tradition (She was a lifelong Methodist).  Although many find her hymns overly sentimental…the outworking of her faith in prose and song humbles many of us in our sacrificial service to the Lord.  She is most famous for being blind and composing over 8,000 hymns.  She is quoted as saying that the first face she would ever see would be the one of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Fanny Crosby was also well known outside of the US.  Once she was invited to visit a meeting of the Congregational Union of England and Wales.  Thomas Binney introduced her to the group, by since women weren’t allowed to speak, her husband had to speak for her.  They then preceded to sing one of her hymns.

Here is a link to a video put together by mars hill commemorating her life.

We recorded “Blessed Assurance” one of her more well known hymns. {mp3}  {Leadsheet}
