Hymns of Faith – Songs for the Apostles Creed

(c) Kyle Ragsdale, Oct 2010

This Sunday and next many churches celebrate as “Reformation” Sunday and “All Saints” Sunday.  These are Sunday’s where congregations will give thanks for the work of the saints in building and leading God’s church and to celebrate Christian unity with the “great cloud of witnesses” (Heb. 12:1).  To honor the work of the saints in leading and directing God’s church a collection of musicians engaged in a ‘flash-mob’ song project.  Musicians had 2 weeks to write and record an original tune to a collection of fairly arcane hymns written by Samuel Stone for each article of the Apostles Creed.

We give these songs to you as gift!

The collection of hymns ‘Lyra Fidelium; Twelve Hymns on the Twelve Articles of the Apostles’ Creed‘ (1866) were originally written to support the working poor in Samuel Stone’s English congregation. He hoped that by penning some devotional verse to each line of the apostles creed that he could encourage his congregation who knew the Creed by heart to broaden their own faith and understanding. You can read more here.

Even though the lyrics come from a certain time and space (The 19th century Anglican (english) Church) we hope that they may be an encouragement to you and your church as you seek to grow and be established in your faith.  We have all been super encouraged!

Thanks to Tim Challies and New Old Hymns for the mentions!
