To Us A Child of Hope is Born

I originally found this text while working through the advent and christmas hymns in the Trinity hymnal.  I had never heard a church sing it and I was really struck by the words so I thought it was worth re-tuning.  I recorded it for a collection of new advent and Christmas music in 2009 – you can see the whole collection at BandCampVintage21 Church here in Raleigh is featuring this song in their 2010 Advent Series on Isaiah 9:6 – …and His name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father and Prince of Peace.

John Morrison, a Scottish minister, wrote this text 1781.  In it he traces the prophetic theme’s of the Christ from Isaiah 9.

In verse 1 we hear echo’s of Isaiah 49 & 52 where God says that he will send a light to the gentiles. a light that would be his salvation to the very ends of the earth. A light that would call to Himself from the utter darkness of humanity to the unimaginable depths of heaven.

In verse 2 we hear the familiar chorus of Isaiah 9:6.  “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.”

In verse 3, which is our refrain, the author expands on the themes of verses 1 & 2 and shows us the rest of Isaiah 9 – Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. Here we see the Lamb is upon his throne, justice and righteousness shall stand guard (Jer 23:5) and he shall be the last King of Peace.

In verse 4, his names ring out again, a continued meditation on the birth, life, death, and ascension of Jesus Christ.  A child, a son, a wonderful counselor, a Lord of all.

1. To us a Child of hope is born,
To us a Son is giv’n,
Him shall the tribes of earth obey,
Him all the hosts of heav’n.

2. His Name shall be the Prince of Peace,
Forevermore adored,
The Wonderful, the Counselor,
The great and mighty Lord.

Refrain:
His pow’r, increasing, still shall spread,
His reign no end shall know,
Justice shall guard His throne above,
And peace abound below.

4. To us a Child of hope is born,
To us a Son is giv’n,
The Wonderful, the Counselor,
The mighty Lord of heav’n.
