Top Ten Congregational Songs from 2010

The Top 10 fever finally caught up with us here at Cardiphonia and we thought it might be nice to provide our own twist on the end of year list-making.

While I don’t know that we could add much to the fervently published Top Ten lists floating around.  (wow, you people spend a lot of time of these!)  We went through and picked the top ten ‘newish’ congregational songs from 2010 based on conversational remarks from various musicians and members at Christ the King.  This is a great practice to engage in every year.  It’s fascinating to reflect on why each song connected with the church at large.

**I would love to see other Worship Leader lists. Feel free to post your list below in the comments!

1. All Must Be Well (Matthew Smith arr.)
mp3 | leadsheet

Our church experienced our fair share of sorrows this year and this kept our minds and hearts on the joys of heaven.

2. Glorious Things of Thee are Spoken
mp3
| leadsheet | capo | Sacred Harp

Our musicians discovered that we LOVE revamping old sacred harp tunes.  They rock and our drummers gets to play lots of toms.

3. The Lord is King (Nathan Partain arr.)
mp3 | leadsheet | chords

It’s so hard to find welcome songs that strike the balance between a sleepy congregation and rousing our hearts to worship. This one is so spot on.

4. Out of the Depths – Psalm 130 (Karl Digerness arr.)
mp3 leadsheet | City Hymns

Karl is a sleeping giant of a songwriter for congregational singing.  Looking forward to his first album coming out later this year.

5. Thou God of Love, Thou Ever Blest – Psalm 120 (Benedict arr.)
mp3leadsheet | Psalms for All Seasons

Psalm 120 often gets left out of psalters and certainly isn’t a much sung psalm.  It’s a real downer, but it’s also about traveling from disparate places to our home with God.  Our congregation really enjoyed this and made good use of antiphonal singing with men and women.

6. When God Revealed His Gracious Face – Psalm 126 (Brian T Murphy arr.)
mp3 | leadsheet | All Things New Album

We commissioned this song from Brian Murphy for our Psalms of Ascents grant.  Per usual BTM delivers. A song that my family very much sang into as we experienced the sadness of a stillbirth this year.

7. Approach, My Soul, the Mercy Seat (Benedict arr.)
mp3 | leadsheet | chords

I spent a good bit of time reading with John Newton this year.  This is one of my favorite texts and I wanted to give it a different feel from either the traditional or the Indelible Grace version.  The congregation loved it first time we played it.

8. Come, Holy Ghost (Benedict arr.)
mp3 | leadsheet | chord chart | piano arr.

This is an older arrangement of ‘Come, Holy Ghost’ for me but hadn’t introduced it to my present congregation.  It’s become a favorite this year.

9. Jesus, Lover of My Soul (Greg Thompson arr.)
mp3 | chord chart | leadsheet | igrace hymnal

Somehow I never discovered this gem from Greg Thompson until this year.  Such a great marriage of text and tune. I probably picked this one too much.

10. Lo! He Comes with Clouds Descending (Benedict arr.)
mp3leadsheet | info

I’m glad to see this text showing up in a few other place as churches struggle to find good music for advent.  We sang this as our closing hymn during the entire advent season.

*A few we’re looking forward to singing in 2011.

God the Spirit – Matt Boswell arr.

To Thee I Come – Clint Wells arr.
mp3 | leadsheet

Come, All Ye Pining – Brian T. Murphy arr.
mp3 | leadsheet
