Hope College Worship – Psalms EP 2017

Last Fall we invited singer-songwriter and anglican artist-in-residence Wendell Kimbrough to perform a concert of his most recent Psalms album as well as lead a songwriting retreat with my worship teams with Hope College.  After a few hard months of edits, arrangements, and pre-production work my students booked one day in Hope’s fancy new recording studio and knocked out all 7 songs in a few takes!!

For most of my students this was the first time they had ever been commissioned to write something explicitly from the psalms – and for some of them the first time they had actually sung the words of the psalms in worship! The album is a mix of congregational, devotional, and small group worship expressions from the Psalms. We hope you find something that blesses you and your worshipping communities.

Album downloads include a songbook with chord charts and leadsheets. Any questions or comments can be directed to worship (at) hope (dot) edu.

Songs of Prayer EP – Hope College Worship

Throughout spring semester 2016 at Hope College Campus Ministries we’ve been focusing on prayer.  We preached through the Lord’s Prayer, and through the classic prayer acronym A.C.T.S. using Psalms 8, 51, 138, 27.  As well we wanted to explore songs that focused on the language of prayer – praying twice as Brian Wren describes it. Through two retreats – one with Andy Piercy at TSM and one at home with Nashville songwriter Christopher Williams, the students explored the language of prayer through the medium of song.  We ended up with five songs total – two totally original songs wrestling with personal prayer, and three retuned hymns with various degrees of deconstructions and additions.  We hope you enjoy!  A full PDF songbook is included with the album download.  Thanks to Joey Novak at Minimum Bible for the artwork.

Vespers with Sandra McCracken
Title: My Soul Finds Rest In God Alone

Opening Prayer – O Gracious Light
O gracious Light, pure brightness of the ever-living Father in heaven,
O Jesus Christ, holy and blessed!
Now as we come to the setting of the sun, and our eyes behold the vesper light,
we sing thy praises, O God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
Thou art worthy at all times to be praised by happy voices, O Son of God, O Giver of life, and to be glorified through all the worlds.
Songs Of Invitation
Trinity Song (unpublished)
My Help, My God – Psalm 42
Prayer for Divine Guidance
Open my lips, O Lord,
and my mouth shall proclaim your praise.
Create in me a clean heart, O God,
and renew a right spirit within me.
Cast me not away from your presence
and take not your holy Spirit from me.
Give me the joy of your saving help again
and sustain me with your bountiful Spirit.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever.
World without end. Amen.
Come Thou Fount Of Every Blessing (B)
(Robinson/Trad.)
Come Light Our Hearts – Rain for Roots
(McCracken)
A Collect for Grace
Grant us, O Lord, to trust in you with all our hearts; for, as
you always resist the proud who confide in their own strength,
so you never forsake those who make their boast of your
mercy; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns
with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
Amen.
Silence
Psalm Reading – 62-63 excerpts
Song – My Soul Finds Rest (Psalm 62)
Prayer (Read together as musicians continue quietly)
We have sought to find rest in places that only make us weary and empty.  Almighty God, give us your peace and quiet us from within.  We have looked for a place to hide from the storm, from the heat of the day, and from the fear that comes over us at night.  Be our eternal home, our rest, our shelter and our strength. We turn away from tthe shallow springs of self-reliance to drink from your living water that we may be satisfied.  We return again to you, our Father.  Satisfy us again with your abundance, Holy Spirit.  In every age, O LORD, you have been our refuge.
Psalm Reading – Ps 126
Rock of Ages Cleft For Me
(Augustus Montague Toplady/Trad)
Psalm Reading –  Ps 40

Closing Prayer –
Be present, O merciful God, and protect us through the hours
of this night, so that we who are wearied by the changes and
chances of this life may rest in your eternal changelessness;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Doxology
Praise God from whom all blessings flow, praise him all people here below
Praise him above ye heavenly hosts, praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen
 Let us bless the Lord.
 Thanks be to God.

You Are Blessed (The Beatitudes EP) – Hope College Worship

Here is a single that Naaman and I wrote for the Hope College Worship EP on the beatitudes.  This song was started at a “Writing for Words” retreat at the Collegeville Institute (check out their summer writing retreats). When we started worship planning for the Fall at Hope College I was really excited to discover songs that artists had written inspired by the beatitudes and was pretty shocked when I didn’t find much.

If you are poor and weak,

You are blessed;
God will give to you his kingdom.
If you lament and mourn,
You are blessed;
God will comfort all your grieving
If you are meek and mild,
You are blessed;
God will pour out all his riches.
If you are starved for right
You are blessed;
God will fill you with his goodness
CHORUS:
C Am F C Am F
Rejoice, Rejoice, Rejoice in your God
If you are merciful,
You are blessed;
God will show you His great mercy.
If you are pure in heart,
You are blessed;
You will see the face of Yahweh.
CHORUS:
If you are filled with peace,
You are blessed;
God will make you his own children.
If you are pierced for good,
You are blessed;
God will give to you his kingdom.
Bridge: F Em/G Am C
Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia
to the King of Kings And Lord of Lords
Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia
for the strangers here, the refugees
Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia
To those ones who died for Jesus Christ!
Alt Chorus:
Rejoice you persecuted
Rejoice you martyrs in his Name

Resources for a Series in the Book of Acts

Screen Shot 2014-06-13 at 11.44.13 AM

Hope College has been worshipping their way through the book of Acts this year and I’ve been collecting and curating resources to support and encourage our journey. Many of these resources, especially music, is geared specifically towards my current context but I’ve also found some liturgical gems as well.  Especially powerful have been the prayers we’ve been writing around the major scriptural metaphors of the Holy Spirit.

Our staff read John Stott’s illuminating little book Baptism And Fullness: The Work of the Holy Spirit Today to begin the year.

Our Song List:

Holy Spirit – Jesus Culture
Light a Fire – The Royal Royals
Spirit Break Out – Worship Central
Let the Spirit of the Lord Come Down – Nigerian Traditional
Breathe – The Brilliance
Come Holy Ghost – Bruce Benedict

Prayers to/for the Spirit

A Prayer to the Holy Spirit (St. Augustine)

Breathe in me O Holy Spirit
that my thoughts may all be holy;
Act in me O Holy Spirit
that my works, too, may be holy;
Draw my heart O Holy Spirit
that I love but what is holy;
Strengthen me O Holy Spirit
to defend that is holy;
Guard me then O Holy Spirit
that I always may be holy.

PRAYERS TO THE HOLY SPIRIT (HOPE COLLEGE)

Holy Spirit as Dove – Grace Claus
Holy Spirit as Breathe/Wind – Bruce Benedict
Holy Spirit as Re:Creator – Grace Claus
Holy Spirit as Fire – Trygve Johnson
Holy Spirit as Water – Bruce Benedict
Holy Spirit as Tongues – Grace Claus

Prayer of an Artist – David Taylor

Liturgy and the Holy Spirit

Confession (worship sourcebook)

Spirit of the Living God,
All nations, tribes, and tongues belong to you.
All glory, honor, and praise are due your name.
Therefore, we confess that we have been a divided people—
Mother from child, Brother from sister, And neighbor from friend.
Have mercy on us and send your power upon the church,
That we may know, once more, that you have
Baptized us in one baptism, one faith, one Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Tear down the walls of hatred and the towers of sin in our lives.
May your Spirit descend upon our lives and make us holy and one.
In the name of your son, Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen.

Epiclesis – Prayer of Richard Baxter

Collect – Prayers for Pentecost

Collected Prayers for the Feast of Pentecost

“O Holy Spirit, descend plentifully into my heart. Enlighten the dark corners of this neglected dwelling and scatter there Thy cheerful beams.”
– Saint Augustine
